On the evening of Wednesday June 12th a group of us visited The Glenside Hospital Museum at Blackberry Hill, Stapleton. The Museum houses collections relating to the history of Bristol Psychiatric Hospitals and Learning Disability Hospitals. We were given a fascinating talk and tour by Dr Ihsanul Haq Mian who is a retired Consultant Psychiatrist at Southmead Hospital.

The Museum is housed in the old hospital chapel and was re-developed in 2009/10. It has on display an array of medications and remedies, drawings by patient Denis Reed, a fully operational church organ, E.C.T. machines, padded cell, straight jacket, mortuary equipment, ophthalmic instruments, an undercarriage door of a Messerschmitt Bomber from WW2, and dioramas of an everyday ward, sick ward, and operating theatre.
