On Saturday 39 of us set off to Exeter at 9am for our annual Christmas shopping trip. We had a very smooth uneventful journey although it took over half an hour to actually arrive in Exeter town centre due to the volume of traffic. It was a good day despite the weather and everyone enjoyed the large variety of shops and also the Cathedral and Museum.

On Wednesday evening this week, Tim Mayo gave us a talk and demonstration entitled ‘Nothing like a Dame’ which was a fascinating insight into the world of Pantomime Dames. Tim has been in many Pantos over the years playing the Dame although in Cinderella he is usually an Ugly Sister. He showed us how he transforms himself into a Dame and also the makeup he uses - with several helpful hints for us all!

Unfortunately the ukulele players who were booked to play for us last night were unable to make it. Mrs Jill Sims MBE kindly agreed to come and entertain us by reading some very amusing poems from books that she has collected over the years. She does this to raise funds for the Great Western Air Ambulance and we were very grateful to her for stepping in at the last minute.

This was the first meeting of our Horfield Families year when we all meet up again to pay our subs and present a cheque to representatives from our chosen charity for last year. We were very pleased to welcome Lizzie and Cam from the Changing Tunes Charity. Lizzie explained that this charity takes music into prisons to the most vulnerable in society and helps them to feel part of a community and have a feeling of self worth. At present musicians go into 14 prisons and the re-offending rate ha...

It was the final meeting of the Horfield Families year last night and we held a very successful AGM despite England playing in the semi-final of the World Cup at the same time. We were so grateful to Father Patrick for chairing our meeting when I’m sure he would have preferred to be at home watching the match on TV – although now we know the outcome, I don’t think he minded in the end. We tried very hard to keep the latest score from him.

The high spot of our evening was welcoming back G...

On Wednesday evening 15 of us visited Hanham Court Gardens and I think everyone will agree with me that it was one of the best garden visits that we’ve had in recent years.  We were warmly welcomed by the owners Richard and Julia and also by Danny the events manager. Danny and Julia gave us a very personal tour of the beautiful gardens and we ended the evening with delicious carrot cake and tea/coffee. We’d like to thank them both for a lovely evening and a visit that we would definitely ...

On Wednesday evening it was our turn to host the annual Deanery Quiz with St Peter’s Church and the Church of the Good Shepherd. Everyone said they really enjoyed it and it was with great pleasure that we handed the cup to this year’s winners - the Church of the Good Shepherd. Thank you to all our members for the excellent supply of cakes which added to the success of the evening.

Last night was a meeting with a difference when we were badly let down by our planned speaker at the last minute. Two of our members valiantly stepped forward to save the day – Ann Chapman gave a most inspiring talk about her wonderful work at the Children’s Hospice, Charlton Farm and Val Ellis brought along a quiz which she had found in her loft this very week! Our very grateful thanks go to them both.

John Penny came to Horfield Families on Wednesday evening to show us archive film of Somerset seaside resorts dating back to the 1920’s up to the 1980’s. We all tried very hard to spot ourselves on vintage footage of days out at Clevedon, Weston and even Severn Beach but could not see anyone we knew!

On Wednesday evening 19 of us paid a visit to the Müller Museum in Cotham. We were given a very interesting talk about George Müller and his life by Lois McGinley before looking around the Museum. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we are very grateful to Lois for giving up her time to make this such a fascinating insight into the history of the Müller’s Homes.
