Many thanks go to our hosts for the lovely cakes we enjoyed at half time.

On Wednesday evening 19 of us paid a visit to the Müller Museum in Cotham. We were given a very interesting talk about George Müller and his life by Lois McGinley before looking around the Museum. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we are very grateful to Lois for giving up her time to make this such a fascinating insight into the history of the Müller’s Homes.

Wednesday June 14th

Posted by Carole Jones on Thursday, June 15, 2017, In : Visits

On a lovely sunny June evening, twenty four of us (including Cathy’s grand-daughter) went on a visit to the Kingswood Heritage Museum. Not many of us had even heard of this museum before and thanks to the three volunteers who made us really welcome, we had a very interesting evening. The museum contains many artefacts from Kingswood, Warmley and surrounding areas and is well worth a return visit as there is so much to see.

Posted by Carole Jones on Thursday, June 9, 2016, In : Visits

On Wednesday evening fifteen of us visited the University of Bristol Botanic Garden in Stoke Bishop. We were so lucky this year that the weather was kind to us and we only had a few drops of rain – so different to previous years! We had a very informative guided tour by Derek, one of the official guides who was extremely knowledgeable about all the plants and various species growing in the garden.

Maritime Walk June 6th

Posted by Carole Jones on Sunday, June 14, 2015, In : Visits

On a cold but dry evening a group of us with friends and partners gathered at Temple Church for a maritime themed walk around the Redcliff area.  Our guide from the Long John Silver Trust was a very entertaining and interesting speaker who obviously loved his subject. He talked about Bristol’s trading past – both legal and illegal and its links with stories of Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, not to mention the infamous pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach). Our last stop was outside the H...

On a very wet Wednesday afternoon, five of our members plus husbands went to visit Bristol Blue Glass in Bedminster. We had demonstrations from two very skilled glass blowers, one of whom had been doing this job for 41 years (but not all at Bristol Blue Glass). We also had a browse around their small museum and learnt the history of blue glass in Bristol.

Saltford Brass Mill is situated on the River Avon at Saltford and a group of Horfield Family members plus family and friends were given a tour by two very knowledgeable volunteer guides on the evening of Wednesday June 13th.

The Brass Mill dates from the 1720s and is listed as Grade II and is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. There was a watermill on the site at the time of the Domesday Book and it is the last surviving mill of over 30 mills which were once on this stretch of the Avon.  Th...
