This year our Christmas meeting was slightly different in that we had our own in-house entertainment in the form of a five minute Christmas panto (Cinderella), which was performed by the committee (plus a variety of  wigs). It was the final meeting of the Horfield Families year last night and we held a very successful AGM despite England playing in the semi-final of the World Cup at the same time. We were so grateful to Father Patrick for chairing our meeting when I’m sure he would have preferred to be at home watching the match on TV – although now we know the outcome, I don’t think he minded in the end. We tried very hard to keep the latest score from him.

The high spot of our evening was welcoming back G...

The meeting on October 8th was very well attended and we were pleased to welcome many of our friends and family. We had a very enjoyable evening of Indoor Curling kindly organized for us by Julia and Richard Morgan.  It was great fun with a lot of friendly competition and ended with a hard fought victory by a team who called themselves ‘The Wild Joneses’ as it comprised Gill and Derek Wilding and Carole and Mike Jones - see the photo below of the victorious four holding the winning 'pucks...

On Sep 12th we had our first meeting of the new Horfield Families year and Kate handed a cheque for £750 to Denise Johnson-Carr who received it on behalf of Ronald McDonald House. Denise was quite overwhelmed with the large amount and thanked us for our generosity and our help over several years. She explained how this money is greatly needed to enable Ronald McDonald House to continue it’s good work with the parents of sick children at the Children’s Hospital.

At the beginning of our April meeting Gill Wilding gave a short tribute to Audrey Hyder who was the founder of the Horfield Families Group and sadly passed away recently.  Audrey started the group (known then as Horfield Young Wives) back in 1953 and she has been a great source of strength and help to many people over the years. She will be greatly missed.

Margaret Gosling then gave the group a flower arranging demonstration. We were very grateful to her for donating the five beautiful arran...

Movie Musical Magic

February 8th was a bitterly cold evening but we all forgot about the low temperature when we were entertained by Terry Merrett-Smith and his musical movie memories. He played us many tunes with accompanying slides from movies past and present, and even encouraged us to sing along! It was an extremely enjoyable meeting and we were very grateful to Terry for travelling all the way to Horfield from Backwell.

Posted by Carole Jones on Thursday, January 12, 2012, In : Monthly talks

We had an extremely energetic meeting on January 11
th with our very own professional keep fit instructor Judy Lee who is also one of our members.  As you can see from the photos, a great time was had by all. I expect there were a few healthy aches and pains the next day, but it is very good for us. Our thanks go to Judy for making it so entertaining with many recognisable tunes from the past!

Christmas Meeting

Posted by Carole Jones on Thursday, December 15, 2011, In : Monthly talks

We had a very musical Christmas evening on December 14th when John and Angela Shaw came to entertain us with Christmas songs and carols from the West Country. They both sang to the accompaniment of John playing on several of his dulcimers. Roger Revell also accompanied them for some of the songs on the penny whistle, concertina and violin (not all at the same time!)  We were so grateful to all of them for a most entertaining Christmas meeting. We concluded the evening with mulled wine, mince ...
